The Rock Star Life Formula

There is a certain mindset that comes with being a modern day rock star. You need to have certain qualities that you not only think about, but that you also put into action in your business and personal time.

While I don’t have the exact science down, I believe that there is a formula, or at least some steps, for living like a rock star and designing the life you want.My equation looks something like this:

P + C + Co + A + I = RS

…or Passion + Confidence + Community + Action + Improvements = Rock Star

Let’s go over the pieces of this (not so exact and ever improving) equation.

Passion

Not everyone can make a living doing what they love, there are just not enough Halo Game Testers to go around.  The passion part lies in doing everything that you can to ensure that you are happy, excited and motivated to do what you do everyday in your career. Many people mistake this to mean they have to work for themselves, get rid of the man or live on a tropical island. Instead this means taking every necessary step to gt pleasure out of your day, even through doing work.

Two quick examples. My buddy Eric is a motivated self-starter just over a year out of college. We worked together on many projects and he saw my motivation and courage to work on my own. He had every opportunity to do the same thing. Instead he worked hard and did everything in his power to find a job with a company that allows him to be creative, innovative and inspired every morning. The kind of job where you like staying late, love happy hours with co-workers and love waking up in the morning.Eric is living like a Rock Star.

Example number 2 is the person who breezed their way through high school, worked their ass off through college and is now looking into the job market without even a clue as to which direction they want to go. They have little to no work experience and worked towards a major with no end goal in mind. In their first year out of school they have worked 3 jobs, hated their boss and dread waking up in the morning. Their passion lies in a field they never studied and have no idea how to get from where they are now to where they want to go without disappointing parents, friends and themselves for not looking within sooner. This person is not a rock star and is a dreamer without action.

Confidence

In order to have the Rock Star Life Mentality you need to have confidence. Confidence that your ideas, your dreams and your passion can come alive no matter the circumstances. In today’s economy it is easy to lose confidence if sales slip, paychecks drop and bosses skimp over your ideas. The true rock star rises to the occasion and asks for forgiveness later. They learn from failures and take blame, not hiding or passing blame on outside influences. This confidence is born over time, through testing the waters and creating action.

Community

In order to be a rock star you need an audience. This can be your direct supervisors, your cleints, a group of less fortune individuals, fans, students or peers. This group needs to look to you for guidance around your passion and expertise. Your confidence gives them the impression that you can lead and make a difference in their lives or business.

Action

The rock stars in the music world got to where they are because of action. They took the steps to record demos and indie records. Took action to show up at auditions, practice their live shows, play for crowds of 10 to 10,000 and build their reputation and fan base one-by-one.

The Internet moguls that flood your inbox with million dollar dreams and affiliate schemes look like they have a business on auto-pilot. It may be that way today, but what got them there was action to start campaigns, actions to test, go to conferences, meet and wow partners and create products and systems that generate their income.

Barack Obama took action to create a campaign that changed the way politicians run a race. He created a team that worked hard and created a movement that no one could deny was anything less than phenomenal.

The action you take in your life ultimately defines who you become. Wayne Gretzky once said,

“You miss 100% of the shots you never take.”

When trying to sculpt the life you envision for yourself you need to take shots, even the wrong ones, as they build your character and help you learn which leads to the next step…

Improvements

Rock Stars that stand the test of time improve over time. Their businesses and careers grow as they test the waters and apply all their knowledge and education through success and failure to commit to what they are doing. The advent of the Internet makes it easier than ever to track conversions, find patterns and improve.

The goals you set today are not the same goals you will have in a year, 5 years or 10 years from now. Think back to goals you made in high school. ow have you grown and how has your life improved? If it has not improved you are missing a core ingredient to having the lifestyle you wish for yourself.

Add Them Together

If you put these 4 letter together and plug in real life situations you may get something like this.

P = Helping people through the education that technology can bring to young people around the world

C = The confidence to teach these lessons to anyone, anywhere, at any time without fear of failure of humility.

Co = A community of students, individuals in less fortunate situations, small business and rocking Fortune 5’s that see the ability to be led, inspired and educated to make their business better or their lives better.

A = Monthly seminars, daily blog posts, constant conversation and networking and having an action plan to meet goals at selected intervals with penalties for missing par.

I = Testing every step of the way. Video taping each seminar. Critiquing each post. Allowing the community to interact and help growth all while continuing to educate from the best leaders and influential people in this industry.

= Rock Star Life.

This is my formula for my own life. It is something that I look at everyday when deciding what to do next, when I question myself on a decision and when I go and rock in front of one of these groups.

I challenge you to see if you can fill out the equation for the Rock Star Life. Even if you only start to have pieces to the puzzle, there are many opportunities to fill in the blanks. You can’t learn algebra in a day and you also can’t change your life in a day. You need to work at it everyday in order to come full circle and realize that there is always something worth chasing and always someone waiting for you to guide them.

So, fill in the blanks

P =

C =

Co =

A =

I =

I look forward to learning from you guys and hearing about your ideas to become rock stars in your own life.
