An Interview with Blogger and Affiliate Marketer Murray Newlands
Google “Famous Blogger” and you will see Murray Newlands’s Blog, that’s how good this guy is! I meet Murray at Affiliate Summit East in New York City a few weeks back and we really hit it off. From chatting about the affiliate world, to leveraging blogs for traffic and SEO to looking outside your business to make more traction for your business, Murray really gave me some solid advice and has a great career ahead of him. We also teamed up in a wild Beer Pong Championship put on by Eric Schechter and the Clickbooth team. Murray is both a big affiliate as well as building his reputation in the blogging world as a celebrity blogger for his affiliate marketing blog murraynewlands.com.

(At the Clickbooth Bloggers Party)
When I got back from ASE09, I decided to shoot him an email to get his perspective on the lifestyle of Affiliate Marketers and how young people can approach this business concept. Here is what he had to say.
Greg: First, tell my everyone how awesome it was to walk out of the Clickbooth Affiliate Summit Party as the Beer Pong champion?

(Murray and I after taking home the championship!)
Murray: The night started out with a meal hosted by Clickbooth at one of New York’s top restaurants, hanging out with some of the biggest bloggers and top affiliates in the industry. We moved on swiftly to the Beer Pong tournament. I had never played Beer Pong before, however I do have some skill with the Beer part, and I got lucky with a few shots. I was very lucky you were on my team and we won the $1000 prize - Now that is a night out! I felt over the moon with the night, helped a little by the beer. Greg and I are available for Beer Pong tournaments by appointment
Greg: Ok, back to business. One look around ASE09 and you could see that the Affiliate Marketing industry is booming and a majority of the folks there we young entrepreneurs. What is it about affiliate marketing that attracts a younger audience?
Murray: Internet marketing is changing very rapidly, with the growth of social media and changing trends online. I think younger minds sometimes grasp changes in consumer behavior faster and are able to take advantage of new traffic sources. Also, approaching things with new and fresh eyes can be helpful and I think that is why there are so many younger people at the events.
Greg: How would you explain affiliate marketing to a kid fresh out of college who wants to go and sit at a desk for 50 hours a week?
Murray: If you are a musician and you want to sell your tracks online with a website collecting payments, you can ask music fan sites to drive traffic to your sales page and give them a commission for making those sales. Musicians win by reaching a bigger audience and fan sites win by making money. This can provide an opportunity both sides of the spectrum, and a great lifestyle. While these deals are about online traffic, they are often done in face to face meetings and at some great events like Affiliate Summit.
Greg: If a young marketer was to get started today in this industry, where would you point him to? Blogs, forums, networks, etc.
Murray: You could check out www.abestweb.com or affiliatesummit.ning.com
Greg: What have you been able to learn about business and creating a long term career for yourself in this industry?
Murray: Work on the long term and you will win the race. Online marketing is very much about being a team player. Help others and they will help you. Pass on learning to others and they will teach you too. If you help others and that means that they are more successful and they help you in return, then you both grow. If you can develop a group who are very successful, there is no stopping you.
Greg: What does your lifestyle look like? Travel, work schedule, family, etc.
Murray: I do a lot of travel and have friends around the globe. I spend a lot of time in London, LA, New York and San Francisco. I work long hours- That said, many of these hours are at shows and events with friends and we have a great time. This does put a lot of pressure on family, friends and relationships. I try and see my family and friends as much as possible. I am currently single and open to offers

Hey Greg
It was great to meet you in New York and hang out with Eric Schechter & the Clickbooth team. Taking there money was even better
I hope to see you at Affiliate Summit Las Vegas in a couple of months.
Murray
You too man. Looking forward to collabing on something in the future.
I have to admit…you guys were definitely a force to be reckoned with at that Beer Pong tournament …even though Thatcher and I would have taken you guys down in the Finals if the other team didn’t cheat! haha
Are either of you attending BlogWorld Expo in Vegas this year? If so, we definitely need to schedule a rematch!
Definitely looking forward to hanging out again at IZEAFest! Pancheros is on me
Greg, first off let me congratulate you on Under 30 Rockstar. Looks like such a great opportunity for young entrepreneurs. I hope to send some traffic your way!
Watching you use affiliate links and interview people who are experts in the industry has inspired me to learn more about it. I currently do not have any affiliate ads on my personal blog, and am thinking of the one of the following:
1. Turning my blog into a site that generates revenue
2. Starting another blog for the sole purpose of building community AND making money
What do you think? I know that you moved most of your efforts here to a new blog. Is that working out better than a domain with your own name?
